I found this all very interesting, how he had to live a solitary life, on the fringe and under the radar. While Remarque writes clearly and articulately, in this novel there were too many instances where he mentioned alcohol, almost creating the impression that he did not known what else to write. I especially was drawn to the author’s simple, direct phrasing of the story in contrast to the complexity of the circumstances of war. The first half sets up the plot of a German, Ravic, though that is not his real name — he is literally a man without a country; Germany has exiled him and France will not recognize his medical license because of his political status.

For this reason and the couple itself, it became difficult to read this book because I could marria understand why Remarque had found it obligatory to make his characters drink all the time. I loved the narration, and Remxrque highly recommend listening to this book rather than reading a paper copy. Then trjumph is Ravic, who likes to insist that he loves her, but only when Joan has already started to doubt it.
