That Green’s initial love for the story was not undone by his first reading of the Argonautca epic is, to my mind, admirable.

Many a Hellenistic aegonautica must have approached her bridal bed like Medea, thinking more of realpolitik than of the delights of love. It took me some time and a lot of work before I could fully appreciate what makes this a successful epic poem instead of an excuse for showcasing erudition on a wide array of topics.
