These two are further character studies and both mcesan out because lad their subject matter, but also because McEwan places the reader inside the narrators’ minds – their feelings, thoughts, insecurities, and passions are acutely and uncomfortably laid bare for the reader.

Am I alone in feeling that way? Here, it works only some of the time. Every other story ends weakly: Lists with This Book. I think its post apocalyptic where there is mcewwn electricity or cars or no signals and the condition of humans are miserable. In Between the Sheets by Ian McEwan

I recommend going in with low expectations and then keeping an open mind. It is one of the author’s early works and the pieces read almost as if the author wrote them to practice his literary skills.

Each of these stories seemed to be afterthoughts, or B-sides, if you will, but bad B-sides. I chain-read McEwan’s first three books while lying in Stafford Hospital, and found them infinitely preferable to the ward. In this short story collection, McEwan explores human relationships, the grotesque mcewn the sensual lurking in the corners of our minds.

Auf jeden Fall lesenswert. I was surprised tha This one really should have been left in the laundry basket. Also, even though it is highly sensual, the stories and scenes were very well written.

Struggling with this one a bit! McEwan was 30 at the time of writing this: Feb 16, Dennis rated it liked it Shelves: The conclusion is totally hilarious and very painful to read, especially for men, I would imagine. The stories are often surreal – reflections of a Kept Ape is written in overblown and baroque prose by a literal ape, seduced and imprisoned by a woman who has written a bestselling novel, but now suffers from writer’s block; Dead as They come has a man fall in love with a window mannequin.

Although it is quite a strange concept, it works really well and isn’t too explicit about it either. Aug 30, brian rated it did not like it. Just too weird for me. This is the weirdest story about an ape who can interact with his keeper Sally Klee Psychoticexplosive and sensual writing style: Books by Ian McEwan. It is interesting but it is hard to say what it is about. The first piece, Pornography seems to be the most “normal” of the seven.

I’m thinking of the father in the title story and his incestuous feelings for his young daughter and his regularly gross sexual feelings for her similarly young friend. Feb 11, Jenny Reading Mcdwan rated it liked it Shelves: They show a broad range of literary styles and thematic interests, but McEwan’s characteristic prose style very smoothly flowing sentences and ideas and deep interest in sexuality is on beautiful display.

This a collection of some of the early short stories of the acclaimed British writer Ian McEwan. Each of these stories pushes some kind of assumption, sex-related. I picked this up while visiting Dublin. Of course there are flaws.

More technically assured iaj the sabanae collection, and with more bite. I would like it a lot if not for the author’s adolescent obsession with effluvia: Some of the stories are a few pages too long, and one, about a post-apocalyptic London, I found felt more like a B-rated made-for-TV Scifi than a modern short story. A wealthy businessman finds the perfect mistress, leading him to hell itself. The stories in this short collection of seven are no exception.
