As a serious, scholarly attempt to open up a new, exploratory path of Islamic history, the book has already engendered much debate. Actually there are more sincere Orientalist scholars out there. I wish I knew more about early Islam, Byzantium rule over the middle east, and Samaritanism so as to evaluate Patrica Crone’s arguments more critically, but I what I understood of the arguments made here resonated with me. Negatively, the Prophet was disengaged from the original Palestinian venture by a chronological revision whereby he died two years before the invasion began.

However, there is always the risk of placing too much emphasis upon influences from earlier sources, which makes it seem that Islam is nothing more than a mixture of old ideas, and has not contributed anything original.
