As a serious, scholarly attempt to open up a new, exploratory path of Islamic history, the book has already engendered much debate. Actually there are more sincere Orientalist scholars out there. I wish I knew more about early Islam, Byzantium rule over the middle east, and Samaritanism so as to evaluate Patrica Crone’s arguments more critically, but I what I understood of the arguments made here resonated with me.
