She was quite taken with McGahern’s prose and reading this for myself, I can certainly see why. To think it took me until now to discover this great writer! At first sight, not the type of book where the reader easily identifies with one of the characters. I only say underrated McGahern has won several noteworthy prizes just because I hadn’t heard of him and didn’t think he’d gotten the recognition he deserves this side of the pond. Amongst Women — 7.
With the exception of Joun and his young son Michael, this story centres on many women characters. Why is Rose so eager to marry a man whom the rest of the town has suspicions about? While I enjoyed McGahern’s simple, unflashy prose, I’m inclined to agree.

The child and woman went from the room to room until they had stopped each clock in the house and covered every mirror. Together they feel invincible in the face of the outside world, and when they gather together at Great Meadow, each member feels bound by this strong family unit. As the main character, Moran, is never endearing, McGahern challenges the reader to empathise with him and to understand why the women in his life remain emotionally maongst to him, even after they have successfully established independent lives away from Great Meadow.
Some things never change, no matter the time period or location.

He’s caught between an indifference he feels politically from the country jcgahern was proud of fighting for and has now somehow gone past him and the proud, sullen self-sufficiency he has spent a lifetime accumulating. Then, like a shoal of fish moving within a net, Rose and the girls started to clear the table. Their exclusiveness as Morans of Great Meadow is such that it does not even embrace their own husbands and children. A theme of the novel is the difficulty of communication between a father and his children, which questions Ireland’s conceit of itself as a healthy family-centred society.
Then in a series of flashback narratives without any chapter aongst or structure of that sortthe novel tells the story of this controlling, sometimes violent but always family-oriented man and of his wmen with his second wife, Rose, and with his three daughters and two sons.
Michael Moran served as a guerrilla in an Ireland War of Independence and he is proud of it. I thought that this was written superbly neat. I don’t think so. Edit Cast Series cast summary: This is my first McGahern novel but if the others are anywhere near as jogn as this one, it won’t joh my last.
